Viagra Results: Does Viagra Work?

If you’re experiencing the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, you may be curious whether Viagra® is going to help you.

Many adult men experience the effects of ED, and the famed little blue pill can sound like a magic bean of sorts.

Viagra (also known as sildenafil) has been around for decades, and while it was first prescribed as a blood pressure medication, the uh, rising benefits quickly became the medicine’s primary prescriptive benefit.

For decades, the medication has gotten results, and done so with relative safety. So if you’re considering taking Viagra for your erectile woes, it might be just the thing you need to boost your bedroom game back to its old standards.

To understand why Viagra is so effective, though, first we need to explain how your member works.

How Erections Work

You get hard through two physical processes: blood flows into the vessels of the penis at an increased rate, and then a muscle traps that blood in two chambers called the corpora cavernosa.

What happens when you become aroused is that your brain sends signals to dilate the blood vessels, blood then flows in, and gets trapped, keeping you erect.

If everything is working well, you get to full mast. If it’s not working right, you’re experiencing erectile dysfunction.

What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) erectile dysfunction is “a condition in which you are unable to get or keep an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual intercourse.” That involves anything from performance anxiety to partial erections.

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by many factors, including stress, anxiety, hypertension and blood flow issues, hormone imbalances, certain habits, side effects from illicit or prescribed drugs, poor diet and obesity.

Erectile dysfunction affects an estimated 30 million to 50 million men nationwide, making it fairly common. Because it’s so common, the treatments available have been thoroughly tested over the years.

One of the most commonly prescribed treatments is Viagra.

What Viagra Does

Viagra is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which works by blocking PDE5s from being produced by the penis. PDE5s break down guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which is a chemical that increases blood flow to the penis.

So essentially, Viagra stops the body from flipping the off switch for erections, and dilates the blood vessels.

Because the main ingredient in Viagra, sildenafil (generic Viagra), increases blood vessel dilation, it is sometimes prescribed under the brand name Revatio® to treat arterial hypertension.

As such, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider before starting Viagra if you have a heart condition or use medication for blood pressure.

Once taken, Viagra takes around 30 to 60 minutes to become active, and lasts for around four hours.

You may be wondering how effective Viagra is. According to Harvard Medical School, about 70 percent of men respond well to PDE5 inhibitors.

Those effectiveness rates are largely determined by the cause of the erectile dysfunction, though.

Men with “no identifiable organic cause” for their impotence fare best, with a 90 percent success rate.

Diabetes reduces the outlook; only 50 percent of men with it respond well. Other problems like prostate cancer and its respective treatments may further complicate the results.

Taking Viagra Safely

At the end of the day, Viagra may pose an obvious benefit if you’re suffering from impotence, but that doesn’t mean you can just start buying things off the internet.

There are plenty of untested, questionable products on the market, from questionably sourced generic Viagra and other supplements, to outright dangerous compounds like “herb Viagra.”

This is a serious medication, and your healthcare provider should be the one to set your dosage and prescribe the right medication for your needs.

Viagra is also not the only option on the table.

Cialis® (generic tadalafil) is a another PDE5 inhibitor, but its dosage can be standardized into a daily medication that will allow you to function at any time of day or night.

In other words, you won’t have to plan and pop a pill before getting to business.

There are also other PDE5 inhibitors — namely Stendra® (avanafil) and Levitra® (vardenafil)

But whether Viagra seems right for you or you’re just starting to learn about potential treatments, talking to a healthcare provider is the right first step in your process.

The main reason: a doctor or other medical professional will be able to help you avoid nasty drug interaction issues and be aware of side effects.

The most commonly reported side effects with PDE5 inhibitors tend to be headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle pain, flushing and stuffy nose.

Small numbers of patients also report abnormal vision, and if you experience vision loss, stop taking the medication immediately and seek emergency help.

Also, don’t take viagra alongside other ED medications or heart medications like nitrates. Sudden and severe drops in blood pressure may result, which could be fatal

Final Thoughts

It might go without saying, but erectile dysfunction can be an embarrassing and shameful condition to deal with. We know that sometimes there’s no consolation in being reminded that you’re one of tens of millions of men suffering from it.

But shame and embarrassment aren’t good reasons to avoid addressing the problem properly — Viagra is a safe and effective solution to the ED problem, but ED might be a symptom of some deeper issue, like high blood pressure, diabetes, depression or anxiety.

Any of these things left untreated can only bring you to more serious problems down the road.

So, take the time to talk to a healthcare provider. It might even be the case that your ED will resolve itself once you treat other problems. Those are the kind of results you really want; better sex and better health is one hell of a combo.
